WORCESTER — The Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are investigating a non-fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in the City of Worcester today, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.
In the morning of August 22, 2025, members of the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS), United States Marshals Service and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office were executing an arrest warrant on a Superior Court case in the area of Strathmore Road in Worcester.
The target of the warrant, identified as Chris Betances, 23, of Worcester, attempted to flee in a vehicle and drive towards the Officers. A Deputy U.S. Marshal on scene, in concern for his safety, shot and wounded Mr. Betances. The officers immediately began to render aid to him and transported him to a local hospital. He is in stable condition at this time.
Mr. Betances was arraigned in Worcester Superior Court today on the outstanding warrant and held without bail. He is in custody and returns to court on August 29, 2025.
This incident remains under investigation by the Mass. State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, State Police Crime Scene Services, State Police Firearms Identification Section, State Police Cyber Crimes Unit, State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section (CARS), State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS), State Police Troopers Assigned to the Uniform Division of Troop C, United States Marshals Service, and the Worcester Police Department.
