Fredette Held Without Bail in 1994 Murder

WORCESTER — John R. Fredette of Saco, Maine, was ordered held without bail today after pleading not guilty to murder in the 1994 slaying of Kevin Harkins, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Mr. Fredette, 49, is the second suspect to be arraigned before Superior Court Judge Janet Kenton-Walker for the murder of Mr. Harkins, who was called outside from Suney’s Pub on Feb. 15, 1994 and never seen again.

Elias Samia, 45, of 78 Arlington St., is also being held without bail after being arraigned Feb. 16.

Mr. Samia was arrested at his home on Feb. 15      

by Worcester Police and State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s office.

Worcester Police, State Police Detectives assigned to the DA’s office and members of the U.S. Marshall’s Task Force in Portland, Maine, arrested Fredette on a fugitive from justice (murder) warrant on Feb. 15 in South Portland.

Both defendants were secretly indicted last week by a grand jury.
