STURBRIDGE – Shortly before 1:00 a.m., on Thursday, June 18th, the Sturbridge Police Department, Southbridge Police Department and Massachusetts State Police Troopers from the Sturbridge Barracks responded to reports of a vehicle being driven into the Sturbridge Plaza Hotel located at 400 Haynes Street in Sturbridge. There were then additional reports of shots fired into the hotel, striking a guest.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect drove to the hotel in an attempt to locate two individuals known to the suspect.
Responding officers located a guest suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was transferred to Harrington Hospital, and later Life Flighted to UMass Lakeside where he remains in critical condition. At this time, investigators do not believe the victim was one of the individuals the suspect had been seeking.
Two officers and a trooper made contact with the suspect and attempted to talk with her. The suspect subsequently discharged her firearm again, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound. EMS on scene rendered extensive life-saving measures, including the LUCAS machine, but the suspect was determined to be deceased.
At this time, we will not be providing any names.
It is early in the investigation, and it will continue ongoing in the coming days by the Sturbridge Police Department, Mass State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, State Police Crime Scene Services, State Police Crash and Reconstruction Section (CARS), State Police Firearms Identification Section (FIS), and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
