RUTLAND — Detectives continue investigating the death of a woman whose body was found today inside a burning home at 2 Joanna Drive, according to District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
In a press conference at the scene, Mr. Early said circumstances inside the home were deemed suspicious. The investigation was halted at that point as the State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office applied for and subsequently received a search warrant for the property.
The Rutland Fire Department was called to the two-story home about 7 a.m. after a neighbor reported seeing smoke coming from the building.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
Investigators have not yet made positive identification of the body.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
The death is being investigated by State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office as well as the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Rutland Police and Fire.
