FITCHBURG – A 53-year-old woman died after Fitchburg firefighters pulled her from her burning home at 71 Cottage St. this morning, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
Cheryl L. Cutting was pronounced dead at 8:33 a.m. at Leominster Hospital.
Fire officials determined the fire was caused by pellets for a pellet stove stored too close to the water heater in the basement. There was no evidence of working smoke alarms in the home.
The victim was the sole occupant of the single-family home.
State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Fitchburg police and fire departments are investigating the fire. The Department of Fire Services’ Code Compliance Unit and the State Police Crime Scene Services also assisted.
