Victim of Apparent Murder-Suicide Identified

WORCESTER – The woman whose body was found in the trunk of a car in Maine last week has been identified as 28-year-old Maddilyn Burgess, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.

Maine State Police have reported that Gyrth Rutan, 34, committed suicide in front of a Trooper after being pulled over in Gardiner, Maine on Thursday afternoon. Police discovered the body of Ms. Burgess in the trunk, an apparent victim of a murder-suicide.

Sturbridge Police and the State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office began investigating after Maine State Police discovered Mr. Rutan resided at 5 Fairview Park Road, Apt. 12 in Sturbridge. Detectives searched Mr. Rutan’s residence on Friday and discovered evidence of a crime scene at this address.

The Medical Examiner in Maine has determined that Ms. Burgess died of blunt force injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing. The Maine State Police, the Sturbridge Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services and the scientists at the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab continue to assist the State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office in the investigation.
