WORCESTER – A Worcester County grand jury handed up indictments today charging three men with murder in last month’s shooting death of Shane Bennett, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
Mr. Bennett, 24, was fatally shot on Aug. 16 on Newbury Street. Prosecutors have said the shooting was part of a drug deal gone bad.
Jeffrey Johnson, 33, of 34 Courtland St., Worcester has been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit a crime and armed robbery; Mathew Pye, 30, of 1 Prospect St., Worcester, with murder, armed assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm not at home or work; Simon Holley, 28, of 269 Millbury St., Worcester, with murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of a firearm not at home or work.
All three men had previously been charged in Central District Court, but not with murder.
The cases now move to Worcester Superior Court where the defendants will be arraigned at a date to be determined.
