WORCESTER – The State Supreme Judicial Court this week affirmed the 2012 first-degree murder conviction of Ronald C. Dame, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
Mr. Dame of Fitchburg was convicted of murdering Clara Provost, 23, also of Fitchburg in January of 1974. Although he was suspected of the murder at the time, the case was largely circumstantial and he was not charged. Years later, evidence in the case underwent DNA testing and analysis found DNA consistent with the defendant’s and inconsistent with alternative suspects.
Mr. Dame was indicted by a Worcester County Grand Jury on Nov. 20, 2006. He was convicted of murder in the first degree on the theory of extreme atrocity and cruelty. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
