UXBRIDGE – Early this morning, Uxbridge Police Department Officer Stephen LaPorta was killed while on duty, after he was struck on Route 146 Northbound, near mile marker 5.9, in Uxbridge.
The preliminary investigation suggests that at approximately 12:40 a.m., Officer LaPorta was outside his vehicle, assisting a motorist, when he was struck.
Officer LaPorta was declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The motorist who was being assisted was not physically injured.
Officer LaPorta had been with the Uxbridge Police Department for approximately two years and leaves behind a wife and one child. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues, and ask the media to respect their privacy at this time.
The investigation remains ongoing. Agencies involved in the investigation include the Mass. State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Uxbridge Police Department, Uxbridge Fire Department, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, MassDOT, and the Mass. State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section (CARS), Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section (CVES), and Crime Scene Services Section.
