WORCESTER – Yesterday, a Worcester County Grand Jury handed up indictments for manslaughter and other charges against 43-year-old Jonathan Reyes for the fatal shooting of 63-year-old Luis Mejia, of Fitchburg, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Mr. Reyes, of Clifton, New Jersey, was indicted on one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and carrying a firearm without a license.
On Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Fitchburg Police responded to the area of Mechanic Street in Fitchburg for reports of a person who had been shot. Upon arrival, officers located a single male victim, Mr. Mejia, suffering from a gunshot wound outside a vehicle. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Mr. Reyes was arraigned in Fitchburg District Court in August 2025. The indictment moves the case to Worcester County Superior Court, where he is expected to be arraigned on January 8, 2026.
