FITCHBURG — A 23-year-old city man was shot and killed on Blossom Street last night and another older man was slightly injured in a separate shooting on Goddard Street about a mile away, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
The man was shot near 30 Blossom St. shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday. He was taken by ambulance to UMass Leominster Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has accepted the case and autopsy will be performed. The positive identification of the victim will be made by the medical examiner.
Mr. Early and Fitchburg Police Chief Ernest Martineau said the Blossom Street shooting does not appear to be a random act.
The State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Fitchburg Police Detectives, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, State Police Firearms Identification Unit, and the State Police Crime Lab are investigating. The Fitchburg Fire Department assisted at the scene.
The second shooting occurred about 25 minutes later near 48 Goddard St. In that case several shots were fired at a vehicle and a man sitting in the car sustained a minor injury. Investigators are still trying to determine if the two shootings are related.
