LUNENBURG – One man was killed and another injured when their dirt bikes collided Saturday afternoon on an unpaved access road near 1281 Lancaster Ave., according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Dwight Wheeler, 34, of 1281 Lancaster Ave. was thrown from his bike and landed in a ditch. He was transported to UMass Memorial Health Alliance Hospital in Leominster where he was pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m. Tyler Dowling, 20, of 23 Hobson St., Leominster, who was driving the other dirt bike, was transported by helicopter to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester where he was in stable condition with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A witness told investigators the dirt bikes were speeding toward each other when their front tires met knocking Mr. Wheeler of his bike and causing Mr. Dowling and his bike to slide on the ground before stopping.

The crash remains under investigation by the State Police Detectives assigned to Worcester county District Attorney’s Office and the Lunenburg Police.
