FITCHBURG – A New Jersey man was arrested today in connection with a fatal shooting in Fitchburg, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.
Jonathan Reyes-Contreras, 42, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.
On Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Fitchburg Police responded to the area of Mechanic Street in Fitchburg for reports of a person who had been shot. Upon arrival, officers located a single male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound outside a vehicle. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Reyes-Contreras is expected to be arraigned in Fitchburg District Court on Monday.
The initial investigation suggests that the two parties were known to each other. There is no danger to the public at this time. The matter remains under investigation by the Fitchburg Police Department’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.
