BARRE — A 71-year-old Barre man was charged with murder today in East Brookfield District Court in the shooting death of a man believed to be his landlord, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
Barre Police responded to 113 Town Farm Road after receiving a 911 call at 8:29 a.m. today. A middle-aged man was discovered on the grounds of that address with multiple gunshot wounds. The man, who has not been positively identified, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 8:40 a.m.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has accepted the case and an autopsy will be performed at the ME’s Westfield Office.
Robert Leger of 113 Town Farm Road was apprehended at the scene. Later he was charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Mr. Leger was arraigned before Judge James Haddad. Not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf and he was ordered held without bail. The case was continued to Sept. 10 in East Brookfield District Court.
The case remains under investigation by the State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Barre Police, State Police Crime Scene Services, State Police Ballistics and forensic scientists from the State Police Crime Lab.
