LANCASTER – A 72-year-old inmate, serving a life sentence, was murdered Tuesday afternoon in the Souza- Baranowski Correctional Facility, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
William Sires, convicted of the 1973 murder of his mother in Pittsfield, was found badly beaten and near death in a cell on Tier N1 at about 2 p.m. Tuesday. He was pronounced dead in an ambulance en route to Leominster Hospital at 2:36 p.m.
The State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and the Department of Corrections are investigating.
