SHIRLEY – The Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and the Department of Correction are investigating the death of former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez at the Souza-Baranowski Correction Center, according to District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Mr. Hernandez, 27, was found unresponsive in his cell shortly after 3 a.m. today. He was brought to UMass-Memorial Health Alliance Hospital in Leominster where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy in Boston to determine the cause and manner or death.

Mr. Hernandez was serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder in 2015 in the 2013 shooting death of Odin Lloyd in North Attleboro. He was found not guilty last week of a 2012 double homicide in Boston.
