WORCESTER — A Worcester County Grand Jury today handed up indictments charging Fitchburg parents in the death of their 6-year-old daughter in April after she was found unresponsive in the family home, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

Shana Pedroso, 38, was indicted for murder and her husband Marvin Brito, 38, was indicted for manslaughter. They will be arraigned in Worcester Superior Court at a later date.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner recently determined that the 6-year-old girl died of blunt force injuries and that the manner of death was homicide.

The girl had been found unresponsive by police at 139 Stoneybrook Road, Fitchburg, on April 10. She was transported to UMass-Memorial-HealthAlliance in Leominster where she was pronounced dead. Her 9-year-old brother, who was also home at the time, was transported to the hospital with several injuries.

The next day, Pedroso and Brito were arraigned in Fitchburg District Court on several assault and abuse charges. In August, they were indicted by a grand jury on charges related to the injuries suffered by the 9-year-old boy. That case is pending.

The State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and the Fitchburg Police investigated.
