LEOMINSTER — The death of a 42-year-old woman in a residence at 69 Walnut St. is being investigated by State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office and Leominster Police, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of the woman’s death following an autopsy.

Police discovered the death on Sunday after being alerted by the resident of the Walnut Street address. Investigators believe the woman died late last week.

James P. Vaillancourt, 49, of 69 Walnut St. was arrested Sunday and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He was arraigned yesterday in Leominster District Court and was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Monday.

While the cause and manner have not been determined, Mr. Early said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Besides the State Police Detectives and Leominster Police, the death is being investigated by State Police Crime Scene Services.
