UPTON – Gabriel Dias De Holanda has been extradited to the United States and is expected to be arraigned Monday on charges related to a fatal 2022 crash in Upton, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.

Dias De Holanda, 19, will face charges of manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in the crash that occurred on Aug. 6, 2022.

That night, Upton Police, Fire and EMS responded to the report of a single car crash on Glenview Way. The car had overturned and the front seat passenger, Jacob O. Osanya, was trapped inside. Emergency responders removed Osanya from the vehicle and transported him to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester where he was pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries.

All five occupants of the vehicle, including Dias De Holanda who was driving, suffered injuries in the crash and all were transported to UMass for treatment.

Two days after the crash, the Upton Police Department and Massachusetts State Police learned that Dias De Holanda, who had been living with his family in Bellingham at the time of the crash, had left the country. It was later learned that Dias De Holanda, a Brazilian national, traveled to Brazil, a country which does not extradite its own nationals, shortly after the crash.

In December 2023, State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office learned Dias De Holanda was travelling to the United Kingdom. UK authorities arrested Dias De Holanda in London on Dec. 22, 2023 pursuant to a provisional arrest request submitted by the United States. Following the submission of a U.S. request for his extradition, Dias De Holanda consented to extradition at a hearing in London on Feb. 22, 2024 and the UK subsequently ordered his extradition. On Friday, May 3, Dias De Holanda was escorted back to the United States by the U.S. Marshals Service.

Dias De Holanda is expected to be arraigned in Milford District Court on Monday, May 6.

The Upton Police Department, CEMLEC Crash Reconstruction, the State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, and the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, all worked on this case.  Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs, U.S. Department of State, U.S. Marshals Service, and UK authorities provided substantial assistance in the extradition of Dias De Holanda from the United Kingdom.
