SPENCER – The Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the town of Spencer last night, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.
Shortly after 5:00 p.m. on February 3, 2026, members of the Spencer Police Department responded to a 911 call in the area of 20 Main Street in Spencer. Officers arrived quickly on scene and located an injured party, who appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency services rendered aid to the victim and facilitated medical transport to UMass Medical Center.
Approximately twelve minutes later, a person matching the suspect’s description from the earlier incident was located in the area of West Main Street in Spencer. Officers approached the suspect, who then produced a firearm and shots were fired.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Patrick Madison, fled to the nearby Family Dollar with officers in pursuit. Upon arrival, officers quickly evacuated the store and the surrounding businesses. Additional resources were requested, including the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (CEMLEC) negotiator, SWAT Unit, Drone Unit, K-9 Unit, as well as the State Police Air Wing Unit.
CEMLAC SWAT team members entered the Family Dollar and located the suspect in a closed bathroom. There was an exchange of gunfire, resulting in injuries to a Millbury Police Officer and the death of Mr. Madison. The officer was transported to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. No further information is available at this time regarding the identity of either victim.
This incident remains under investigation by the Mass. State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, State Police Crime Scene Services, State Police Ballistics Section, and the Spencer Police Department.
